Updating Cost Basis

quick and easy

When transferring securities accounts, the purchase prices (cost basis) are not automatically transferred to your AGORA direct™ securities account. The transferred securities are posted to your account at the current daily price. However, you can of course adjust the purchase prices and other purchase data for the transferred securities at a later date via the account management function.

Note: Please keep all purchase confirmations for the securities to be transferred from your previous bank/broker. This will enable you to prove the purchase in the event of any queries from the tax office regarding the purchase prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

regarding securities account transfers at AGORA direct™

How long does it take to transfer securities?

Transferring your securities usually takes more time than opening a new account. On average, the process takes about two to three weeks.

In some cases—particularly when foreign securities are involved—it may take longer.
The actual duration depends on your current bank/ broker and the type and number of securities you're transferring.

Are there any fees for transferring my securities?

At AGORA direct™, securities transfers are free of charge. However, your current bank or broker may charge transfer fees on their end. We recommend checking with them in advance to avoid any surprises.

Which products can be transferred?

You can transfer all tradable products in our product range, except for shares that belong to the so-called "US Micro Caps" (e.g. Penny Stocks). A transfer of these types of shares will be rejected by the account-holding broker Interactive Brokers, even if trading is generally possible. Further information on this can be found at: https://ibkr.info/article/2892

Savings plans and fractions of savings plans or ETFs are also not transferable.

To check whether your securities are offered for trading with us, you are welcome to use our product search.

Do I have to transfer the entire securities account?

It’s entirely up to you which securities you wish to transfer to AGORA direct™. You can transfer your entire account or just a portion of it.

Will I be able to sell securities during the transfer process?

You can still trade your securities in your previous account as long as they are visible there. This is especially important for futures contracts, where you may need to react to market changes and potentially close a position early. Once the product is no longer in your previous account, it can no longer be transferred. However, this could potentially cause delays in the transfer due to differing details between the two transfer parties.

Can I transfer my loss offset or exemption order?

Since the AGORA direct™ account is a U.S. securities trading account, no taxes (capital gains tax) are deducted. You are responsible for handling your own tax reporting. Therefore, there is no loss offset or exemption order. At the beginning of the following year, you will receive a free annual account statement from us, listing your gains and losses, which you can submit with your tax return.

Can I transfer the entire account including cash?

A securities transfer can only include securities positions, not cash. Direct cash transfers from another securities account to an AGORA direct™ account are not possible. However, you can withdraw the cash from your previous securities account to your checking account and then transfer it to your AGORA direct™ account.

Does the transfer automatically close my previous account?

No, the securities transfer does not involve closing your account. Once all products have been transferred to your AGORA direct™ account and you have withdrawn the cash, you can request the closure of your previous account with your bank or broker.

Can Russian ADRs be transferred?

Due to the political situation between Ukraine and Russia, the European Union has imposed sanctions against Russia. This affects trade in securities and transfers.

Pursuant to Article 5(5), since 12 April 2022, it has been prohibited in the European Union for registered or recognized trading venues to list and provide services for transferable securities of legal persons, entities or bodies established in Russia that are more than 50% publicly owned.

AGORA direct™ and other traders are therefore prohibited from transferring these securities. It is not yet clear when the sanctions will be lifted. AGORA direct™ will keep its customers up to date on all news relating to Russian ADRs and the associated sanctions.
